Traveling Old Highway Notes Style

PREMISE:

If it was important enough for someone to film, then upload to YouTube, then it is a historic part of the story of a place. By combining the stories of different place, a tapestry is woven and a tilework collage is assembled that shows a complete vision of a community.

A map provides a structured list of places to visit as a route travels from its beginning to its end. Any given route has its own pace, highlights, lowlights, history and culture as an expression of those who visit or live there.

This project will trace many routes, on land and water, both historic and modern. It combines my curated YouTube video playlists on 8 different topics with maps of each route.

SOME OLD HIGHWAY NOTES: A Manifesto?

  • I cannot find any other sites online that do what I am doing here, that is why I am building this site. It is a non-commercial, amature project.

  • I have spent years working on this project before creating this site. I expect to continue working on this project for years to come

  • I consider this a site to be a folk art project. I prefer texture to polish, friction to smooth. Visual clutter, bright colors, eclectic musical whiplash, and the written word are my preferred aesthetics.

  • This site was built on a windows PC and is best viewed there. It should work on mobile for the most part.

  • I avoid using AI. Not because I am scared of it. I have experimented with it. It is resource wasteful. It is as engagement driven as the rest of the enshitified internet. It would rarely follow my specific instructions on the first prompt and, without mentioning it, always added "improvements" that I did not want or need. The AI always said I was on the right path, until I clearly wasn't. It's not ready for mass usage as I write this in the fall of 2026. I resent it being forced on me.

  • I generally do not use "shorts" format videos. I like my attention span and want to keep it. I dont care for the TikTok style interface and would prefer YouTube maintain a different style. I am fed up with the homogenized internet and I resent "shorts" being forced on users. DIVERSITY IS GOOD!!!

  • Consider this, when you don't use YouTube's "Watch Next" videos, you inject new life into your "Watch Next" queue by mixing up the algorithm.

  • A subscription to YouTube or an adblock will help make playlist viewing a lot more pleasurable. Consider the subscription, it is a good deal in my opinion. Creators get paid more from subscribed views that from advertising views. Youtube pays smaller creators poorly, if at all. Let your conscience be your guide.

  • METHOD: How I Make the Sausage

I select a route. I use open street maps to begin an interactive map.

I find the first city at the beginning of a route. For example:

    1. Route 66>Chicago, IL
    2. Highway 101>Tijuana(exception), Baja California, Mexico
    3. Interstate 95>Miami, FL
    4. Pan American Highway>Ushuaia,Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina
    5. Trans-Canada Highway>Victoria, British Columbia or Masset, British Columbia
    6. Lincoln Highway>New York, NY
    7. Mississippi River>Central Minnesota

I do a series of YouTube searches on each city.Such as:

    1. Songs about [City]
    2. [City] Drones
    3. [City] Dashcams (modified by adding route name and direction) etc.
There about 20 search varitions I use.

I filter, then collect the search results into 8 Topic playlists. These are saved on my Old Highway Notes YouTube channel. They are:

    • 1. Songs About
    • 2. Drones, Dashcams, and Walking Tours
    • 3. History and Museums
    • 4. Attractions and Tourism
    • 5. Gardens and Wildlife
    • 6. Fishing and Sports
    • 7. Fairs, Festivals and Parades
    • 8. Music From

I watch the playlists, filtering and refining them.

I add a page to this site for the city. With maps, wikipedia info and curated playlists

I add the city to the map.

I add the playlists to the topic page of this site.

I combine playlists in different site areas to create mega-playlists.

I go the the next city and repeat the process.

Finally, you find my site and explore with me.
